GOLFATHON RAISES $95,000 TO HELP THE HOMELESS
Elliot Borkson, Dan Taylor, Frances Esposito, Kevin PickardThe first annual Broward Partnership for the Homeless, Inc. (BPHI) Golfathon was a “Championship” affair. Twenty-nine golfers, each playing 36 holes of golf, secured pledges from business associates, friends and family for each hole they played. To date, this hearty group has raised more than $ 95,000.
“When I came up with the idea of a Golfathon several months ago I really thought it would be great,” said Kevin Pickard BPHI Board member and Chair of the Golfathon. “Thanks to the efforts of these “Champion” golfers our fundraising event reached heights well beyond anyone’s expectations.”
Brian Gordon, Dan Taylor, Kevin PickardTo recognize the golfer who raised the most money BPHI initiated the “Clubhouse Leader” award. In golf-speak a “leader in the clubhouse” is defined as the player with the best score having completed regulation play. The 2009 award was given to Brian Gordon of Land Baron LLC. Gordon who secured more than $ 8,500.
“As a 40 year resident and active business leader in South Florida I have seen our region grow and mature into an exciting a vibrant community. Along with this comes the increased need to address social issues like homelessness. In many cases the homeless are people like you and me who have just fallen on hard times and are looking for a “hand up not a handout,” said Gordon. “With the tough economic times we are now experiencing, BPHI gives the homeless the opportunity to renew their hope and faith in themselves so they can go back to being productive citizens. As a father of 4 I can only imagine the pain suffered by homeless families. This is why I am supporting BPHI.”
Arthur Greenfeder, Lloyd Rhodes, Elliot MelamedElliot Borkson, BPHI board member and attorney, was recognized as the “Most Valuable Player” for being the best advocate of the Golfathon and the one who recruited the most players and sponsors. Wayne Stofsky of On the Ball Marketing took the award for the “Longest Drive” and Pickard got “Closest to the Pin.”
Presenting Sponsor of the Golfathon was The Leo Goodwin Foundation. Additional sponsors included Fort Lauderdale Country Club, AmTrust North America, Brown & Brown, AutoNation, Inc., Cheney Brothers and the Parrot lounge.
The host committee was chaired by Pickard and included Elliot Borkson, Arthur Greenfeder, Elizabeth Jacobs, Elliot Melamed and Jeff Marbach.
